Average Snowfall and Conditions in the Shenandoah Valley

Due to its location, Massanutten and other popular Shenandoah Valley ski areas, like Bryce Resort, rely on snowmaking systems to keep the season operating with optimum conditions. Between Mother Nature and these systems, the area receives more than 30 inches of snow per year. More than enough to ensure your ski vacation goes off without a hitch.

Skiing the Shenandoah Valley 101

If you’ve never skied or snowboarded before, that’s perfectly fine. Unlike the rugged cliffs of places like Aspen, here in the Shenandoah Valley, you’ll find trails perfect for beginners. The closest resort to your VPMS vacation rental is Massanutten Resort, and their Private or Group Lessons make it easy to get your feet wet (or snowy) before you head out on your own.

Private Lessons are available for all ages but are the only option for children younger than six years to ensure they get the proper attention. Adult Group Lessons are great for everyone aged 13 and up.

Regardless of the class you choose, the professional instructors will help you build your confidence as you master the basics of turning, stopping, and using the lifts. Lessons are available starting at 9 AM, and you must have your season pass or daily ticket before your lesson.

What to Wear When Skiing the Shenandoah Valley

Proper clothing and equipment are key to having a successful and fun day on the slopes. This checklist covers the must-have items you’ll want on hand.

  • Helmet – Compacted snow can feel like cement when you fall into it. Protect yourself from dangerous head injuries with proper safety helmets.
  • Neck Gaiter – Keep your neck warm and dry all day.
  • Goggles and Sunscreen – The sun’s reflection off the glistening snow is beautiful but blinding. Protect your eyes and skin from harmful rays with good goggles and sunscreen. And don’t forget about your lips!
  • Water Bottle – Skiing and Snowboarding are physical sports, and as such, hydration is key. Either keep a water bottle or hydration pack on you or factor in breaks throughout the day.
  • Layers – Maximize your time on the slopes by wearing layers you can add or shed as needed throughout the day. When purchasing or renting clothes, make sure they’re waterproof and moisture-wicking. Synthetics like polyester or pure fibers like wool are great options.
  • Gloves and Footwear – Waterproof gloves or mittens that fit well and wool socks that will fit in your boots are a must. You can even throw in foot and hand warmers on really cold days.
