Average Snowfall and Conditions in the Shenandoah Valley
Due to its location, Massanutten and other popular Shenandoah Valley ski areas, like Bryce Resort, rely on snowmaking systems to keep the season operating with optimum conditions. Between Mother Nature and these systems, the area receives more than 30 inches of snow per year. More than enough to ensure your ski vacation goes off without a hitch.
Skiing the Shenandoah Valley 101
If you’ve never skied or snowboarded before, that’s perfectly fine. Unlike the rugged cliffs of places like Aspen, here in the Shenandoah Valley, you’ll find trails perfect for beginners. The closest resort to your VPMS vacation rental is Massanutten Resort, and their Private or Group Lessons make it easy to get your feet wet (or snowy) before you head out on your own.
Private Lessons are available for all ages but are the only option for children younger than six years to ensure they get the proper attention. Adult Group Lessons are great for everyone aged 13 and up.
Regardless of the class you choose, the professional instructors will help you build your confidence as you master the basics of turning, stopping, and using the lifts. Lessons are available starting at 9 AM, and you must have your season pass or daily ticket before your lesson.
What to Wear When Skiing the Shenandoah Valley
Proper clothing and equipment are key to having a successful and fun day on the slopes. This checklist covers the must-have items you’ll want on hand.
- Helmet – Compacted snow can feel like cement when you fall into it. Protect yourself from dangerous head injuries with proper safety helmets.
- Neck Gaiter – Keep your neck warm and dry all day.
- Goggles and Sunscreen – The sun’s reflection off the glistening snow is beautiful but blinding. Protect your eyes and skin from harmful rays with good goggles and sunscreen. And don’t forget about your lips!
- Water Bottle – Skiing and Snowboarding are physical sports, and as such, hydration is key. Either keep a water bottle or hydration pack on you or factor in breaks throughout the day.
- Layers – Maximize your time on the slopes by wearing layers you can add or shed as needed throughout the day. When purchasing or renting clothes, make sure they’re waterproof and moisture-wicking. Synthetics like polyester or pure fibers like wool are great options.
- Gloves and Footwear – Waterproof gloves or mittens that fit well and wool socks that will fit in your boots are a must. You can even throw in foot and hand warmers on really cold days.

Of all the lore and legends of the Appalachian region, the reputation we have for craft beverages is spot on. From corn liquor to hopped beer and everything in between, if you’re looking to try some of the top regional spirits during your Massanutten vacation, you won’t be disappointed.
With so many places to choose from, it’s hard to know where to start. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the top breweries, wineries, and distilleries in the Shenandoah Valley. Check them out below and see how many you can visit during your next vacation.
Craft Breweries in the Shenandoah Valley
Over the past 14 years, America has been experiencing a craft beer boom, with record numbers of microbreweries popping up left and right. In fact, according to the Brewers Association, the number of breweries climbed from roughly 1,800 in 2010 to 9,247 in 2021.
With stats like that, it’s made sampling unique and creative new beers easy no matter where you go and has turned brewery scouting into a popular vacation activity. If you’re traveling to Massanutten or the Shenandoah Valley and want to add some names to your Untapped journal, check out these recommended breweries.
BrewHaHa Brewing Company
One part comedy club, one part brewery, BrewHaHa is the perfect spot for a night out during your Shenandoah Valley vacation. Founded by Pete Ballou in 2017, it was the first craft brewery approved in Rockingham County.
Just in time for summer, be sure to try the Panama Pete Mojito Lime Kolsch for that just-right sunny day-sipper. With a full calendar of events and comfy outdoor seating available, whether you’re looking for laughs or just want to try something new, they’ve got you covered.
Cave Hill Farms Brewery
Though the brewery only opened in 2018, Cave Hill Farms has been operating in one capacity or another since King George II gifted the Hopkins family rights to 1,000 acres of land. Since then, it has evolved from a cattle and crop farm to a one-of-a-kind brewery.
With everything from seltzers to stouts, Cave Hill Farms Brewery appeals to a wide variety of palates. Pet-friendly and child-friendly, this is a great place to see some live music, grab a bite to eat, and enjoy the difference home-grown ingredients can have on craft beer. We recommend the Guavaberry Grove Sour Ale for something you won’t find anywhere else.
Elkton Brewing Co
This nano brewery’s award-winning work has solidified it as one of the top breweries in the Shenandoah Valley. With food trucks, live entertainment, non-alcoholic options, and 14 rotating taps, Elkton Brewing Co. is a great spot just 11 minutes away from the Massanutten Resort.
Since opening their doors in 2020 (arguably one of the worst times to try to start a business), they’ve proven their power and have created more than 200 unique beers. Currently featuring a menu that contains winter remnants and summer staples, you can find everything from an IPA to a hard cider. And if you can’t decide, they offer two types of flights where you can sample four at a time while you find your new favorite.
Whether you’re a beer aficionado or just someone who appreciates dipping a toe into the local culture, these top breweries in the Shenandoah Valley offer a great example of what this region can deliver. We hope you check them out when you visit. And for even more great breweries, check out the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail!
Sip and Savor at Shenandoah Valley Wineries
The rolling hills of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians serve as impeccable grounds for elite grape cultivation. If you’re a wine lover, visiting some of the region’s top wineries will be the highlight of your Shenandoah Valley vacation.
The two we’re highlighting in this blog are within half an hour of Massanutten, meaning if you’re staying in one of our Vacation Properties Made Simple rental properties, you’re in a prime location to check them out.
Brix and Columns Vineyards
First on the list is Brix and Columns Vineyards. Known for their work with award-winning Michael Shaps of VA Wineworks, their offerings cater to everyone, whether you’re looking for dry, complex flavors or delicious dessert wines. Visit their tasting room for wine flights and glasses by the bottle, or grab a few to take home! With frequent events and a stunning setting, it’s the perfect spot for a beautiful picnic as you enjoy the sweeping beauty of the Shenandoah Valley.
Cross Keys Vineyards
Cross Keys Vineyards is another beloved winery near Massanutten. With their slate-stone courtyard, fountain, and archways, you’ll feel like you’re relaxing in a European chateau. Elevate your visit by booking the CrossKeys Experience, an in-depth tour that takes you behind the scenes as you learn about the wine-making process, tour the grounds, and get a private tasting in the Wine Library. With an assortment of estate-grown reds and whites, as well as a seasonal charcuterie spread, it’s the best way to get the full vineyard effect. Open daily, this is one you’ll definitely want to add to your must-visit list.
Distinguished Distilleries Near Massanutten
Two excellent distilleries are just an hour or so away from your Massanutten vacation rental, and if you’re looking for distinguished spirits, they won’t disappoint. For all your whiskey and rye needs, Ragged Branch Distillery is the way to go. Focusing on traditional distilling methods, making their premium whiskey is a daily endeavor. Visit their tasting room or enjoy a cocktail in a rocking chair as you take in a mountain sunset. From their Bottled in Bond specialties to their Virginia Straight Bourbon, each batch is crafted to perfection.
At Copper Fox Distillery, beyond whiskey, rye, and bourbon, you can also sample their hand-crafted gin, bourbon mash, and amaro for a very spirited experience. They also offer distillery tours at both their Sperryville and Williamsburg locations and have a variety of cocktails and weekly specials on their rotating menu.
Need a non-alcoholic selection? Their zero-proof cocktails ensure everyone can enjoy something tasty. Be sure to ask about their two self-guided flights so you can enjoy a customized sampling of products tailored to your tastes.

Cultural Crafts and Creations
If you’re lucky enough to have a handmade quilt that’s been passed down from generation to generation, you understand how sentimental they are. The love and skill stitched into every square, the careful planning that goes into the patterns, and the creation of something exquisite from scraps of fabric all combine in this uniquely rural Americana craft. It’s a lore that deserves to be protected and preserved, especially with so few people still working in the medium.
At the Virginia Quilt Museum, you can immerse yourself in the cultural heritage of the region. The museum spans three floors at the historic Warren-Sipe House. During your visit, explore exhibits, participate in events like quilting classes and challenges, or purchase a beautiful quilt to add to your collection.
