The market concept began in the 1950s when local Clarence Dellinger decided to being selling local organic produce to the public in the Harrisonburg Police Station parking lot. Eventually, the idea expanded, and by 1979, the farmers market as it’s known today was well underway thanks to fruit and vegetable grower Samuel Johnson. The market grew when the Downtown Harrisonburg Retail Merchants jumped in on the opportunity and since that time, it’s continued to gain momentum and popularity.
